Heart Meridian. The heart meridian begins in the heart. One branch travels up the throat, to the mouth, tongue and into the optic nerve and the brain. Another travels downwards, following the path of the aortic artery to wrap around the small intestines. The branch coming from the heart also enters the lungs and then travels down through the armpit and arms, ending in the little finger. There is an influence on the blood vessels, and blood plasma, and the flow of energy to the organs of the abdomen, including the uterus and ovaries. Most of the physical heart is in EI 2 but the AV Node and Bundle of His, which transmit the electrical signals that control the heartbeat, are found here.

Heart, Midbrain and Neurotransmitters. The midbrain connects the hindbrain and the forebrain and is involved in a number of autonomic regulatory functions including blood pressure, temperature, pH balance, movement, hearing and seeing, and the balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. NES finds an intimate link between the midbrain and the heart, with a two-way exchange of signals occurring continually between them. The heart creates low pressure waves that disperse this information to the entire body, sending messages to each of the cells on how we are thinking and feeling. This Integrator links to speech and audio and visual learning skills. EI-4 also contains all our neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that signal to the brain and nervous system.

Emotions. The heart represents our emotional centre and, as such, this Integrator has a wide range of emotional associations. The heart can be a source of joy, forgiveness, faith and enthusiasm. When the energy in this Integrator is flowing well there is a healthy and positive connection between mind and body and all the cells receive the warmth and love of the heart. When out of balance it can manifest in anxiety, anger, depression and loneliness. We can be broken hearted, hard hearted, soft hearted or lack the heart for something. This is also the psychosomatic Integrator for health-related anxiety and self-sabotaging behaviour. We may stop short of our goals, lacking the heart, faith or love to see something through.
